Brewster was forced into making, no less than six, changes to the side that lost to Hearts at the weekend. One of those changes was to, once again, give Liam Fox the chance to lose his super sub tag.
It wasn’t long before Foxy got the chance to stake a claim for a permanent first team place, barley two minutes into the game, Dennis Wyness set up the 21 year old and from 25 yards, Fox hit the back of the net.
It was game on and Dundee Utd had to wait, only a few minutes, before their first clear-cut chance. A Fernandez cross, found Barry Robson, unmarked, on the six yard line but the ex Jaggie could only hit the post. Caley, though, were not resting on their laurels and seven minutes later a powerful shot Wilson was well blocked by Stillie and Morgan sent the rebound across the face of the goal.
Perhaps the key moment of the game came in 31 minutes, when Fernandez once again set up Robson. This time Robson’s header hit the bar. 10 minutes later Barry Wilson broke the offside trap and was one on one with the goalkeeper. There was to be no repeat of Stillie’s heroics and the Caley Jags went into the break 2:0 ahead.
Dundee Utd had their chances to score in the second half, notably in the 73 minute when, once again Robson hit the woodwork. McIntyre then flicked an effort just past Brown's far post after a towering header from the constantly probing Grant Brebner.
