Before the kick-off and there was a minute's silence for Craig Gowans, the 17-year-old trainee who was electrocuted recently in a training-ground accident.
The first 25 minutes of this game were a fairly scrappy affair, with neither side able to take control. Falkirk then began a period of domination with shots from Gow and Latapy, both blocked by Dodds and then 2 corners. The pressure was on and Mark Brown made the first save of the game in 31 minutes when Latapy again found room for a shot. It wasn’t long before that man Latapy was at it again, this time with a 20yard shot that went wide.
Caley Thistle weathered the storm and managed a couple of chances of their own, firstly with Dargo rounding the keeper but Inverness’ most recent signing found no support and let the ball slip over the line for a goal kick. Then, 5 minutes before the interval, Wilson shot wide from 16yards out.
All in all a pretty dull first half and neither side could complain about the blank scoreline.
Both sides came out for the second half looking more purposeful. Less than a minute after the restart, Daryl Duffy was sent clear of the Inverness defence, only to see the ball smothered by, the onrushing, Mark Brown. Perhaps rattled by this, the Caley Jags took the game to Falkirk and the ensuing spell of pressure resulted in an Ian Black shot hitting the post.
Just before the hour mark it was ICT, who eventually broke the deadlock, when Stuart Golabek caught the home defence napping with a neat pass through to Brewster. The player manager was left with only the goalkeeper to beat and he was not about to let this, gilt edged, opportunity go to waste as he neatly rounded Glennon before slipping the ball into the back of the net.
The pressure seemed to get to Falkirk and Russell Latapy produced a fine display of diving, hitting the ground twice, in quick succession, in Caley Thistle’s box. Although the Ref was not fooled by his antics, the fact that he never showed the Falkirk player a card, just about sums up his attitude to both teams.
It was Inverness, however, who had the last laugh, when a neat move, involving Hastings and McBain, set up Brewster on the edge of the six-yard box. A neat little tap in and it was Falkirk 0 ICT 2.
