Highland March – What's that all about then?

This included, once upon a time, a cycle ride from Manchester to Glasgow – in ONE day. Ahead of his 50th, sitting in the Market Bar in Inverness at Hogmany quaffing a few shandies, he decided he was going to walk to an ICT football match but couldn’t decide where to walk from. One of the lads had a fixture list so it was quickly decided to walk from ICT’s penultimate league match to the last match of the season. In a way, the fixture computer was kind to him when it churned out a little walk from Inverness to Falkirk. He made his intentions known to the masses and it attracted a lot of interest from likeminded nutcases within the ICT support and Highland Marching was born.

Initially Steve was going to do this for pure masochism until, that is, a fellow ICT supporter suggested that the profile of the club and its supporters could be raised if the walk (march) was done for charity. The Highland March, as it became known, was announced to the incredulous masses in a message board thread on the club’s website on 1st January 2003. The thread was spotted by an eagle eyed young lady from the Inverness based Moray Firth Radio Charity Trust and they were able to bring all of their fund raising expertise to the party. The rest, as they say, is history.

The MFR Charity Trust was founded in 1982 and distributes funding raised by numerous events carried out over the year. The Trust finds itself increasingly helping groups and individuals who have fallen through the social service net. Thousands of groups and individuals have benefited, from well-known organisations like the Samaritans to small community groups for older people and young children. The inaugural HM made such an impact on those that took part that it was decided to try and make this an annual event.

The HM is now in its fourth year and with the club now established in the SPL (with it’s infamous ‘split’) the end of season fixture list is eagerly awaited at the start of April.
